The White House announced Wednesday that US President Donald Trump intends to honor Elon Musk and other top technology executives with the country's highest scientific award at a ceremony on Thursday.
In addition to Musk, Trump will award the National Medal of Science during the "Science: A New Golden Age" summit to Google co-founder Sergey Brin, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and AMD CEO Lisa Su.
Michael Dell (Dell Technologies) and Satya Nadella (Microsoft) will each receive the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, the highest award in the field.
"The Trump administration is grateful for the contributions of these outstanding leaders in science and technology. Thanks to them, America remains at the forefront of innovation," White House spokeswoman Liz Hewson said in a statement obtained by AFP.
Musk, whose companies include SpaceX, Tesla, and X, was a close ally of Trump and his largest campaign donor before their relationship soured last year over ways to reduce government spending.
He was also among a group of tech giants who attended a meeting at the White House last week with the president to discuss ways to regulate artificial intelligence.
Musk, along with Huang and others, was invited to the dinner Trump hosted for his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, during the latter's official visit last month.
