North Korea Tests AI-Guided Torpedo System

Pyongyang tested a "new type" guided torpedo system that uses artificial intelligence (AI) technology for target detection and weapon guidance, the North's official KCNA news agency reported Saturday.

This came two days after North Korea announced the launch of two types of strategic cruise missiles from submarines, and weeks after heightened tensions with Seoul following the detonation of two landmines along the border between the two countries.

The agency reported that the underwater test launch of the "Zam-2.0" hypersonic torpedo system was conducted Thursday to "confirm the successful completion of the technological upgrade" of the weapon.

It added that "artificial intelligence technologies have been applied to the target detection and guidance functions of the new generation hypersonic guided torpedo."

Earlier this month, North Korea announced the test of a hypersonic intermediate-range missile that also utilizes AI technology. She said at the time that there was "no way to avoid" the hypersonic missile, asserting that it was "capable of changing its flight path at low altitudes."

Analysts believe that Pyongyang may be rapidly developing its missile capabilities with Russian military support, in exchange for sending troops to support Moscow in Ukraine.
