Google Restricts Access to New AI Model Due to Security Concerns

Google announced Wednesday that it will temporarily restrict access to its Gemini 4 Argon artificial intelligence program, making it available only to a select group of cybersecurity experts, in a move aimed at preventing its misuse by hackers.

"Making this level of leading-edge capabilities available securely requires a phased approach," wrote Koray Cavukoglu, Google's chief AI engineer, in a blog post announcing the program's rollout.

Google said it will voluntarily grant the US government early access to the model and will gather feedback from testers before making it widely available.

This cautious launch mirrors the approach taken by rival Anthropic, which has kept its more advanced model, Cloud Mythos Preview, accessible only to a limited number of trusted organizations.

Washington briefly forced Anthropic in June to suspend Google made its Argonne AI models publicly available, before later adopting a voluntary review process for its most powerful AI models before their release.

This announcement came a day after US President Donald Trump hosted top tech executives at the White House, where they signed a voluntary agreement pledging to monitor the risks associated with their companies' AI systems.

Cybersecurity experts fear that this advanced technology could be used to compromise banks, hospitals, and government systems.

Google stated that its Argonne model excels in complex tasks across software engineering, legal and financial fields, and cybersecurity, and possesses a superior ability to detect and fix critical software vulnerabilities.
