The United States on Friday approved a potential $2.68 billion sale of air defense equipment to Ukraine, following repeated appeals from Kyiv for support to counter Russian attacks.
The US State Department said in a notification to Congress that it had “made a determination to approve a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Ukraine” that would allow it to purchase modern equipment to enhance its air defense capabilities and related services.
According to the State Department, Kyiv requested to purchase equipment including various types of missiles, launchers, counter-drone radars, and trailers.
The proposed sale must be reviewed by Congress.
The State Department said, “If the proposed sale is finalized, it will be financed through European contributions and US foreign military financing allocated during the previous administration.”
It added that “the total estimated cost is $2.68 billion.”
The Ukrainian capital has witnessed an escalation in Russian attacks, which its air defenses are struggling to repel due to a shortage of ammunition.
