Washington and Beijing Establish "Communication Channel" to Address AI Incidents

The White House announced Friday that the United States and China will establish a "communication channel" to address incidents related to artificial intelligence, a move confirmed by Chinese media.

In a briefing document, the White House stated that the two countries have established a "US-China Superintelligence Dialogue to exchange views on the risks and benefits" associated with artificial intelligence. They also agreed to establish a "bilateral communication channel" to address incidents in this field.

Chinese state media, in a report on the summit's outcomes on Saturday, confirmed the agreement to establish an AI hotline.

Artificial intelligence, which US President Donald Trump has recently referred to as "superintelligence," was one of the main topics discussed by Chinese President Xi Jinping with his American counterpart during his visit to Washington, which concluded Friday.

The two rival nations in the field of artificial intelligence are facing increasing criticism regarding the risks posed by AI, following a number of incidents that have raised concerns about the technology slipping out of the control of its creators.

The Chinese president asserted that Washington and Beijing share a responsibility to "develop and manage artificial intelligence for the common good, and ensure that its development always remains under human oversight."

Trump, however, took a contrasting stance, expressing his commitment to maintaining "the current level of regulation."

Last week, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bisnett proposed establishing a mechanism for mutual notification between the two countries regarding any AI-related incidents "related to national security."

He added, "We believe it is crucial to move from a situation of ambiguity to greater transparency between the world's first and second largest AI powers."
