Security Council Meeting on Artificial Intelligence Expected Next Week (French Diplomatic Source)

 

The UN Security Council is expected to hold a meeting dedicated to artificial intelligence next week, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, a French diplomatic source said Monday, amid growing concerns about the risks posed by increasingly sophisticated systems in this sector.

The source told reporters that the issue of artificial intelligence will be "high on the agenda" of the UN General Assembly next week.

"A Security Council meeting dedicated to the topic of artificial intelligence and security is expected," the source added.

France, which holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council in September, is emphasizing the need to discuss "the existential threat that artificial intelligence could pose to humanity," noting that CEOs of AI companies have also expressed their concerns.

However, French efforts may face staunch opposition from US President Donald Trump, who on Monday denounced a "malicious conspiracy" targeting artificial intelligence, strongly criticizing the growing calls for regulations on its development.

Trump described the claim that artificial intelligence could destroy humanity as a "hoax."

"AI also needs to be accountable," he said, noting that it's not about "stifle innovation," "holding back progress," or "delaying its deployment in our economies and societies," but rather about "averting the greatest risks."

In addition to AI, the UN General Assembly will discuss the situations in Lebanon, Gaza, and Ukraine.

The diplomatic source added that France will use its G7 presidency and its rotating presidency of the Security Council in September to defend multilateralism, at a time when international institutions are facing increasing pressure.

"We strongly believe in an international order based on the rule of law, not the logic of force," the source said.
