Russia on Tuesday welcomed a "good idea" put forward by US President Donald Trump regarding a truce to halt the mutual Ukrainian-Russian attacks on energy infrastructure, an idea he said the two countries had agreed to.
"We have seen what President Trump published. We consider it a good idea, a good initiative," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said during his daily press briefing, adding, "We always support peaceful solutions."
Trump confirmed on Monday that Ukraine and Russia had pledged not to target each other's energy infrastructure, a day after he criticized Kyiv for its attacks on Russian oil refineries.
The US president attributed the rise in global diesel prices primarily to "the war between Russia and Ukraine," not to a war with Iran.
While Moscow has been striking numerous fuel facilities in Ukraine for months, including in Kyiv in recent days, Ukraine has also been targeting Russian oil infrastructure in an attempt to cripple Russia's finances.
For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy affirmed on Monday that Ukraine is ready to take "de-escalation steps" if Russia reciprocates.
In his daily address, Zelenskyy highlighted "a strong proposal from the United States for a mutual cessation of attacks on critical infrastructure."
He said, "If this can become a first step toward de-escalation—that is, a halt to Russian attacks on our critical infrastructure and a halt to our retaliatory strikes—Ukraine is ready to support de-escalation."
