At least 37 people were killed and 24 others injured Wednesday when a bus plunged into a ravine after colliding with a pickup truck in Arequipa, southern Peru, a regional health official said.
The accident occurred early Wednesday morning on the Inter-American Highway, which connects the region to Chile and is considered one of the worst highways in Peru in recent years.
"We regret the loss of 37 lives and 24 injuries," said Walter Oporto, the health director for the Arequipa region, in a press statement.
The Lamosas bus was carrying 60 passengers from the town of Chala in Caravelle province to the city of Arequipa.
The bus fell into a ravine approximately 200 meters deep after striking a pickup truck on a curve, according to local media reports citing firefighters.
Traffic accidents are common in Peru due to speeding and poor road conditions.
