Environmental organizations condemn the participation of fossil fuel advocates in the climate conference

Environmental organizations have warned that the presence of numerous individuals with ties to the fossil fuel industry at the COP30 climate conference could negatively impact its outcomes.

The Kick Big Polluters Out coalition has counted over 1,600 people with connections to the oil, gas, and coal sectors who have been granted accreditation to attend the conference in Belém, Brazil—a ratio of one in 25 participants.

Among the participants counted by the coalition are representatives from major oil companies such as ExxonMobil, Chevron, Shell, and Total Energies, as well as public oil companies from the Gulf, Africa, Brazil, and China.

The count also includes individuals associated with companies like Volkswagen and the Danish shipping giant Maersk.

The coalition believes that the presence of these individuals is aimed at lobbying on behalf of the fossil fuel industry and that "the problem cannot be solved by empowering those who are the source of the problem."
