COP30: The United Nations launches aplan to protect against the dangers of global warming

During the 30th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30) in Belém, Brazil, the United Nations launched the "Belém Health Action Plan" to adapt global health systems to rising temperatures and extreme weather events.

The international organization explained that extreme heat, floods, droughts, and storms threaten public health through disease outbreaks, food and water insecurity, and disruption of health services, necessitating addressing inequalities in access to care.

The plan, developed by the World Health Organization and the United Nations University in collaboration with the Brazilian government, outlines practical steps for integrating health into climate strategies. Friday was dedicated to discussions at the Alliance for Transformative Action on Climate and Health pavilion.

The United Nations Environment Programme has also launched an initiative to halve food waste by 2030, reducing methane emissions by up to 7 percent, given that wasting more than one billion tons of food annually contributes 10 percent of greenhouse gas emissions and 14 percent of methane emissions, which is 84 times more warming than carbon dioxide over 20 years.
