Corinthians, one of Brazil's most prominent football clubs, dismissed its president, Augusto Melo, after he was accused of embezzlement and money laundering during the club's annual general assembly held on Saturday.
Melo, 61, who has been suspended from his duties for some time, was charged with criminal conspiracy, money laundering, and theft, according to legal sources, in connection with an investigation into a sponsorship deal with the betting platform Fidbet. Brazilian media reports indicate that investigation documents revealed he created a network of shell companies to transfer funds from the financially struggling club.
Prosecutors demanded that Melo and other defendants in the case pay approximately $7.2 million to the club. The dismissal was decided by a majority of 1,413 votes to 620, according to official results released by Corinthians.
Corinthians, who have won seven Brazilian league titles and have featured stars such as Garrincha, Rivellino, Socrates, and Roberto Carlos, and currently boast Dutchman Memphis Depay, currently sit 12th in the domestic league standings.
